Better Sleep

It must be one of the most-used phrases in the world: “I didn’t sleep very well last night…!”

Some things we can’t change: as we get to middle age and beyond, our sleep patterns change and we tend to wake up more during the night. And if we are stressed or worried, that can have a huge effect on our sleep.

But the experts all agree, there are a myriad of factors we can change, in our efforts to get a better night’s sleep.   Making your bed as comfortable as possible is the most obvious, isn’t it?

Here are a few other tips for you, from the better sleep experts at Woolrest:

  • Create a bedtime routine that relaxes you, such as maybe a bath, etc.
  • Try to get into regular timing:  we all have a day-night cycle called the circadian rhythm, which affects when we sleep and the quantity of sleep we get. It’s a good idea to go to bed at roughly the same time every night, and get up at roughly the same time in the morning. That’s why a long-haul plane flight is so awful – even if you sleep, your body rhythm is out of synch, and you’re not getting good quality sleep.
  • Don’t drink alcohol late at night, or caffeine.
  • Don’t eat a large meal too soon before bed – but also, don’t go to bed on an empty stomach.
  • Don’t use your bed to watch TV, or work on a laptop
  • Get plenty of exercise – but don’t work out just before going to bed, because that will stimulate your system, not relax it!
  • And, always make sure your pillow and mattress are in good shape to give you good support. This is where the Woolrest underlay can help: pure wool pile, with super-comfy wadding inside the underlay for extra support and cosiness.
  • A study conducted on wool and sleep patterns at Monash University in Australia found that the amount of movement during a normal night’s sleep is less, in comparison to the same people sleeping without wool on the bed – helping to give a better night’s sleep.

The luxurious thick wool pile in a Woolrest naturally cushions your body, reducing the load on pressure points such as your hips and shoulders. This is particularly beneficial if you suffer from arthritis etc, and it’s why you’ll get such a good night’s sleep.
