What is the big deal about woollen bedding?
It’s extremely comfortable and healthy, and has wonderful thermal properties – keeping you warmer in winter and yet helping to keep you cooler in summer. And dry.
The average person loses half a litre of water per day, through perspiration and the respiratory process. Much of that is lost during sleep time. But a wool underlay such as a Woolrest, helps absorb that moisture, helping your body maintain a more even temperature at night.
The fibres keep pockets of air close to your body, in a tiny micro-environment. The fibres then disperse heat and moisture from your body, helping to give you a better night’s sleep.
The fibres of wool allow moisture to pass through without the wool itself becoming damp. That’s why a Woolrest mattress topper is healthy – mould and mildew will not develop in dry conditions. This of course is particularly important for people who have allergies.
Scientists at a Welsh Polytechnic ran a study which confirmed that wool helps keep your skin drier, and also lowers your heart rate. Plus, the thick pile in a Woolrest mattress pad naturally cushions the body, reducing the load on pressure points such as your hips and shoulders. Further evidence that a Woolrest on your bed will give you a better night’s sleep.
Why choose a Woolrest underlay over any other product in the market?
The famous Woolrest woollen mattress pad was developed 35 years ago – in fact even today we get the occasional customer tell us they’re still using the same one they’ve had for three decades!
Woolrest has developed a special blend of wool that gives maximum support and comfort, with durability and performance. Our blend is composed of Merino and Downs breeds – merino wool alone does not have the durability and strength of the downs wool. And not only is our wool grown in New Zealand and Australia – but just as importantly, it’s processed here as well.
All our wool is fleece – the best wool – from the sheep’s back, not the skirting wool from the belly, or dirty wool that’s been bleached. And importantly, the wool used in a Woolrest underlay has ONLY been washed or scoured, it has not been treated with chemicals.
How do you care for your Woolrest underlay?
The simplest way to look after it is to air it regularly in the sun, and you should also gently vacuum it to get rid of dead skin cells etc, and to reinvigorate the wool.
It can be spot-cleaned using mild soap and warm water, and then dried in the sun. If you want to clean the underlay, take it to a specialist drycleaners. DRY CLEAN ONLY. Do not wash. Dry clean using low moisture and heat.
Is a single underlay ok to use on a larger mattress?
Not a good idea, because a small underlay on a big bed is likely to move and wrinkle during the night.
It’s best to get the correct size – that’s why we have a fitted Woolrest underlay for every size of mattress, from Single right through to Super King.
Is it compatible with my electric blanket?
YES! Your Woolrest underlay simply fits over the top. The easiest way to remember is: there should only be a sheet between you and your Woolrest.
How long will my wool mattress cover last?
That depends on how you look after it, but a well-cared-for Woolrest should give you satisfaction for a good 15 years.
